“Immigration brings a mixed bag of emotions that severely impact the human psyche. Time after time we have been reminded that we do not belong. When we have the ability to adjust our immigration status we have a sense of relief, but then it quickly turns into guilt, sorrow, numbness, fatigue. When folks need to appear in immigration court or have an in-person interview with an immigration official, anxiety levels are high, the not knowing what the outcome of the case drains you to the core. That same anxiety grows significantly once individuals get released from detention centers and get a letter in the mail with a notice to appear in court. The constant nightmares evolve into PTSD and paranoia, constantly reliving the pain caused by being detained. That pain increases when you are detained and subjected to constant vigilance behind wired walls. Detainment breaks your soul and impairs the ability to simply be at free will. When folks migrate and leave their families behind, that is a void that they carry. In all aspects of immigration, trauma is inflicted. It follows you in your journey, its something heavy that was purposely created to anchor us to the ground preventing us from taking full flight.”
